After a very difficult first pregnancy that included 3-months of strict bed rest, I was exhausted, overwhelmed and up 57 lbs. Once I got the OK from my doctor, I was excited to get back to my active lifestyle. Problem was, I had never gained so much weight before, my balance was totally off and I couldn’t walk around the block without my knees aching.
Life with a small human is wild! The day to day: cooking, cleaning, feeding, playing, mommy meet-ups, shopping, laundry (omg the laundry) is never ending. And when you’re on a health and wellness journey where things like daily workouts and walks, eating healthy and getting proper sleep are non-negotiable, there leaves very little time for anything else.
As you can see from the title there’s a new baby in the mix. I’ve been away for some time because, well, I had the absolute worst pregnancy (more on that later) which left me depressed, bed bound and zero desire to write about health and wellness — because my personal experience was anything but. Now that my daughter is here and I’m feeling a bit more like myself, I’m excited to jump back in and explore health and wellness postpartum (because I’m living it and it’s wild).
A few years ago, I was on route to a weekend spin class and on a whim, decided to pop into a supplement store and take a look around. When I saw their wall of electrolytes products I became curious. As an adult, I had never consistently used electrolyte powder or energy drinks as part of my workout routine (remember when drinking Gatorade as a sporty teenager was a thing?!) I ended up picking up an electrolyte sample packet to see if it would make any difference in my performance on the bike.
Back in December, I started a new at-home workout program that is done in tandem with a macro-timed nutrition plan. Not only was I new to a structured workout program (hello, COVID life) but I had never tracked my macros, or calories for that matter, before. I’m now more than halfway through the 13-week program and I have seen many wonderful changes in both my performance and overall health. It’s like a completely new way of living and eating and I can’t stop telling all my friends about it.
A few weeks ago, I drove to Virginia to attend my first hot yoga class in over a year! Wild, right? Prior to COVID-19, I would typically do yoga a handful of times during the month and there was definitely a couple of hard seasons where hot yoga was my salvation 5 times a week. After getting in 6o-minutes of stretching and sweating alongside – distant and masked – strangers, I was flooded with pure love and appreciation for the powerful, energetic union that is group fitness.
Do you workout on vacation? It may sound strange, but it’s one of the things I most look forward to when taking a trip. When I’m on vacation I generally feel energized (sayonara, work!) and have more time to gently enter the day before jumping into my morning workout. My husband and I have a few upcoming trips that I need to start packing for which inspired me to share with you my exercise mindset when vacationing and the 5 workout essentials I always pack with me when travelling.
I used to be the type of person who only worked out at the gym or fancy and expensive workout studios. Then COVID-19 happened, and well, we were all forced to adjust our workout routine. I remember researching online for possible solutions when I saw an ad for Beachbody on Demand. Full disclosure: I had serious reservations. I didn’t think it was possible to get in a decent workout from my living room with a few dumbbells. Now almost a full year of exclusively doing at home workouts (aside from running or cycling outside), I can confidently say I won’t ever go back to the gym full-time. This new way of working out has completely changed my mindset around what I can achieve fitness-wise from the comfort of my own home.
